Starz to Offer ‘Piranha 3DD’ on VOD With Theatrical Launch

Starz Digital Media May 31 said it will make available summer horror sequel Piranha 3DD for cable and Internet transactional video-on-demand the same day of the film’s June 1 theatrical debut.

Piranha 3DD is the follow-up to the 2010 surprise hit Piranha 3D, from The Weinstein Co. and Dimension Films, which grossed more than $83 million at the global box office. The movie will be available for a 48-hour rental for $6.99 in standard- and high-definition, and $7.99 in 3D; consumers have 30 days from the time of purchase to begin viewing.

Starz Digital Media said that in addition to traditional cable, satellite and telecommunications VOD households, Piranha 3DD will available on Amazon Instant Video (not Prime Instant), Google Play, iTunes, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Starz Digital Media will also bring Piranha 3DD in VOD to Facebook, with the first-ever 3D Facebook VOD app for rental on the leading social media platform. The app allows users to comment and share clips, stills and quotes with their friends.

“We have been looking at experimenting in the premium VOD space; Piranha 3DD provided the perfect title in terms of genre and installed fan base,” said Mara Winokur, SVP of digital media distribution at Starz Media and lead executive at Starz Digital Media. “Adding in the first-ever Facebook 3D option gives viewers even more control over how and when they watch the movie, and is a logical extension of the premium VOD experience.”

Anchor Bay Entertainment will distribute Piranha 3DD on Blu-ray Disc 3D combo pack and DVD later this year.
