Checking email dominates the social media activity most likely occurring on smartphones and tablets during television broadcasts

Nearly half of all users of smartphones and tablet mini computers use the portable media devices daily while watching television, according to new Nielsen research.

The research found that 42% of tablet owners use the device daily while watching TV, compared with 40% of smartphone owners and 14% of eReaders.

The most popular activity while watching TV included checking email (60%) during a program, with an identical number doing the same during a commercial. Another 44% to 46% of smartphone and tablet owners surfed the Web during a TV show, while 42% visited social networking websites.

About 30% checked sports scores, another 29% looked up information related to the program on air, 19% sought additional product information from an ad and 13% looked up ads related to TV spots watched, according to Nielsen.
