Futuresource: Tablet Shipments More than Triple in Q3

Global shipments of tablets hit 15.5 million during the third quarter of 2011, more than triple the 4.5 million shipped during the same quarter in 2010, according to Futuresource Consulting.

Apple’s iPad continues to dominate, accounting for more than 70% of unit shipments, with Samsung, HP and Acer making gains.

America is tablet central, accounting for 46% of global ownership, with an installed base of 24 million. There were 7.1 million tablets shipped to the United States during the third quarter. Uptake in Europe has been slower, with 4.2 million shipments, which was still growth of more than 300% year over year.

Futuresource predicts major sporting events in 2012 will help fuel more uptake of tablet devices.
