Futuresource: Online Video in Russia Grows

Digital home video services in Russia are growing at an exponential rate, according to research from Futuresource Consulting, making the emerging market an attractive option for the content business.
“Despite being in embryonic stages of development, digital services are expected to offset declining packaged revenues and provide a much-needed boost to the market,” said Fiona Hoy, market analyst at Futuresource Consulting.
Hoy said there will be more than 100 billion online video views by people in Russia by year’s end, and by 2015 the online video market should represent more than 30% of total home video revenues.
“Consumer research indicates that Russian consumers are often reluctant to pay for online content available for free on a laptop or PC; however, they are willing to pay for the same content if accessible on a big screen at home,” Hoy said. “This presents a strong opportunity for Hollywood studios to monetize their content through paid-for online video services.”
3D in the home also is proving popular, with Russian consumers prepared to pay a 70% to 100% premium for 3D Blu-ray Disc combo packs, Hoy said.
