LAS VEGAS — DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group announced the winners of several industry awards during its annual reception at the International Consumer Electronics Show Jan. 6.
The DEG honored seven home video releases with Creative Excellence Awards honoring the top Blu-ray Disc and Digital HD titles released in calendar 2014.
Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy was named Best New Release on Blu-ray; Classic Reissue on Blu-ray went to Halloween: The Complete Collection from Anchor Bay and Shout! Factory; New Release on Digital HD went to Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past; Classic Reissue on Digital HD went to Cinedigm’s Stop Making Sense; top TV on Blu-ray went to Batman: The Complete Television Series Limited Edition, from Warner; top Hi-Res Audio Download was Sony Music’s Kind of Blue from Miles Davis; and Best Concert Video on Blu-ray was Quadrophenia: Live in London by The Who, from Universal Music Group.
DEG also named its annual retailer awards, established to recognize excellence in merchandising and promoting new digital entertainment products for hardware devices, Blu-ray Disc, and Digital HD titles; in addition to merchandising sellthrough and/or rental content online.
DEG Hardware Retailer of the Year 2014 went to Video & Audio Center, recognized for becoming a common launch point for new technologies as well as a respected leader in showcasing it.
“Video & Audio Center takes the time to train its staff who are then able to better market consumer electronics products to home entertainment enthusiasts,” said Amy Jo Smith, president of DEG.
DEG Digital Retailer of the Year 2014 went to Comcast for its entry into the electronic sellthrough market and for innovating among its peer group.
DEG Software Retailer of the Year 2014 went to Walmart, with DEG voters commenting on the chain’s longstanding commitment to both physical and digital content.
The DEG Emiel N. Petrone Innovation Awards, named in honor of the DEG founding chairman, acknowledged four of the year’s best digital entertainment products. Best 4K Ultra-HD TV went to Samsung UN65F9000 4K Ultra-HD TV; Best Hi-Res Audio Product went to Sony HAP-Z1ES Hi-Res Audio Music Player; Best Connected HD Device went to OPPO BDP-103D Blu-ray Disc Player; and Most Innovative Home Entertainment Product was Sharp SD-WH1000U Wireless High Resolution Audio Player.
