AMC Networks Historical Thriller 'Turn' Headed to Netflix
8 May, 2014 By: Erik GruenwedelAMC Networks’ new Revolutionary War drama “Turn” is earmarked for Netflix after its initial broadcast season concludes, executives from the cable network confirmed.
The series, which premiered April 6 on AMC, stars Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott) as New York farmer Abe Woodhull, who bands together with a group of childhood friends to form an unlikely group of spies who turn the tide in America's fight for independence.
“'Turn’ will appear on the Netflix platform,” COO Edward Carroll said during the May 8 fiscal call, without elaborating on a release date — likely in 2015.
CEO Josh Sapan said he sees no slowdown in consumers frequenting subscription streaming and DVRs as a means of familiarizing themselves with a TV show and/or catching up.
“I think that there's an inherent human logic in it, which is to say that if … a friend tells you about some show to watch and you haven't seen it in season 1, you may check it out, if you like the friend's opinion and/or if you read a review, you may check it out. That [trend is] not over. That is something that I think will continue,” Sapan said.
Meanwhile, AMC’s first-quarter (ended March 31) results reflected a strong double-digit year-over-year increase in non-affiliate revenue due to increases in revenue related to scripted original programs, most notably the international and home video distribution of “The Walking Dead,” as well as the SVOD availability of “Rectify” and the international distribution of “The Red Road.”
