Dish Offers New Subs Free Blockbuster By Mail Movie Rentals

Dish Network LLC May 19 said it is including three months of free access to Blockbuster By Mail movie rentals to new satellite TV subscribers through Aug. 10.

Blockbuster By Mail offers more than 100,000 titles on disc (no extra charge for Blu-ray Disc) with rental programs starting from $11.99 monthly for one disc out at a time. Disc mailers can be exchanged for up to five in-store rentals per month.

For Englewood, Colo.-based Dish, which acquired Blockbuster for $320 million in April, the offer marks the first cross-marketing effort aimed at integrating the rental chain into its properties — including access to new releases ahead of Netflix and Redbox.

“Dish has the scale and marketing power to introduce our Blockbuster By Mail service to potentially millions of new consumers while bringing a nationally known brand into their living rooms and enhancing their movie, TV show and game selection beyond the set-top box,” Michael Kelly, president of Blockbuster LLC, said in a statement.
