Blockbuster Bows In-Store Latino Movie Department

Blockbuster LLC Oct. 1 said it is launching a “Cine Latino” movie section in about 200 stores. The section — adorned in celebration of Latino film culture – will offer new and catalog titles for all age groups.

Englewood, Colo.-based Blockbuster, which operates 900 stores nationwide and is owned by Dish Network Corp., are targeting the Hispanic market as a strong growth area for the satellite TV operator’s subscriber base and Spanish language TV programs.

The new Blockbuster store section features titles such as Los Inadaptados, El Espiritu, 2033: Apocalipsis Futuro, Pastorela, A Paradise Under the Stars, Manuela and Manuel and Bitter Sugar, among others. Blockbuster is also giving away a free poster of Eva Longoria with the disc rental of For Greater Glory while supplies last.

“We value our Hispanic customers and wanted to invest in an area of our stores that not only celebrates the Latino genre of film but also offers a unique shopping experience,” said Blockbuster president Michael Kelly in a statement. “National Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us to celebrate Hispanic culture, and we’re celebrating with the debut of our new Latino movie section that showcases some of the best new releases and classics in Latino film.”

Select Blockbuster stores will also offer consumers the opportunity to enter the Block Party Sweepstakes for the chance to win a block party with 50 family members and friends, plus a cash prize. Customers can enter the sweepstakes through Oct. 15 at a Blockbuster store.

In addition to the sweepstakes, Blockbuster will also host a series of parties at select stores in Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Dallas and San Antonio to celebrate the launch of the Cine Latino in-store section. More information about the sweepstakes is available at .
