14 Jan, 2016 By: John Latchem
While most of the 2015 movies nominated for Oscars are still playing in theaters, a handful are already readily available on home video or will be by the Feb. 28 Academy Awards ceremony.
Of the eight nominees for Best Picture, Fox's The Martian (seven nominations) and Warner's Mad Max: Fury Road (10 nominations) are already available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. Disney has slated DreamWorks' Bridge of Spies (six nominations) for Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD Feb. 2, and Universal will release Spotlight (six nominations) on disc Feb. 23.
Among the other Best Picture nominees, Fox's The Revenant led all nominations with 12, Paramount's The Big Short received five, Fox's Brooklyn received three and Lionsgate's Room earned four.
Three of the nominees for Best Animated Feature are already available on home video: Disney's Inside Out, Lionsgate's Shaun the Sheep Movie and Universal's When Marnie Was There. The other two are Paramount's Anomalisa and GKids' Boy and the World.
Netflix also enjoyed a bit of Oscar recognition despite its high-profile Beasts of No Nation being overlooked. The SVOD service's What Happened, Miss Simone? and Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom were nominated for Best Documentary Feature, joining The Orchard's Cartel Land (available via Digital HD), Lionsgate's Amy (available on disc and Digital HD) and Cinedigm's The Look of Silence (available on disc and Digital HD).
The Oscar-nominated short films will be available online starting Feb. 23 at several download and VOD sites. Information is available at . A list of theaters playing the shorts starting Jan. 29 can be found at .
