'Gravity' Wins Big at Saturn Awards

‘Her,’ ‘Iron Man 3,’ ‘Walking Dead,’ ‘Breaking Bad’ Also Earn Major Honors
The outer space thriller Gravity was the top winner of the 40th annual Saturn Awards, presented June 26 in Burbank, Calif., by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.
Gravity, available on home video from Warner Bros., won five trophies, including Best Science-Fiction Film, Best Actress for Sandra Bullock, Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón, Best Editing and Best Special/Visual Effects.
Marvel’s Iron Man 3 (on disc from Disney) and Warner’s Her each won three awards. Iron Man 3 earned Best Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Supporting Actor for Ben Kingsley, and it received the inaugural award for Best Comic-to-Film Motion Picture.
Her won Best Fantasy Film, Best Writing for Spike Jonze, and Best Supporting Actress for Scarlett Johansson.
The indie thriller Big Bad Wolves, on disc from Magnolia, won two trophies: Best Music and Best International Film.
In the TV categories, “The Walking Dead” and “Breaking Bad” led the way with three awards each, while “Hannibal” earned two.
“Walking Dead,” the fourth season of which comes to disc Aug. 26 from Anchor Bay, won for Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series, Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series for Melissa McBride and Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Television Series for Chandler Riggs.
“Breaking Bad,” available on disc from Sony Pictures, won Best Presentation of a Lmited Run Series, Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series for Aaron Paul and Best Guest Star in a Television Series for Robert Forster.
“Hannibal,” available on disc from Lionsgate, won Best Actor in a Television Series for Mads Mikkelsen and Best Network Television Series Release (tied with NBC’s “Revolution,” the second season of which comes to disc Aug. 19 from Warner).
In addition, “Hannibal” producer Bryan Fuller received the Dan Curtis Legacy Award.
The Life Career Award was presented to Malcolm McDowell, star of such films as A Clockwork Orange, Time After Time and Star Trek: Generations.
In the dedicated home video categories, Epic Pictures’ Big Ass Spider won for Best DVD/BD Release; Anchor Bay’s Halloween: 35th Anniversary Edition won Best DVD/BD Classic Film Release; Universal’s Chucky: The Complete Collection won Best DVD/BD Collection Release; and the Blu-rays for the third, fourth and fifth seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, from Paramount and CBS Home Entertainment, won Best DVD/BD Television Series release.
