The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s nominations for the 70th annual Golden Globes included a sizeable number of movies and TV shows already available on DVD and Blu-ray.
Among the contenders for Best Motion Picture — Drama, are Argo, Django Unchained, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty, all of which are still in theaters. However, among the nominees for Best Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical, three of the five are available on disc: Fox’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Universal’s Moonrise Kingdom and Sony Pictures’ Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. The other two are Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook.
Best Exotic also earned a nomination for Best Actress for Judi Dench. Salmon earned additional noms for stars Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor in the top acting categories.
Sony Pictures’ Hope Springs earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for Meryl Streep, while Millennium’s Bernie star Jack Black was nominated for Best Actor. Both films are available now on DVD and Blu-ray.
For Best Actress in a Drama, the only performance currently on disc is Rachel Weisz in The Deep Blue Sea, from Music Box Films. Among the actors, Richard Gere was nominated for Arbitrage, which Lionsgate releases on DVD and Blu-ray Dec. 21.
