Avenging Exclusives

Best Buy's 'Avengers' Boxed Set

Sept. 25 was Avengers day in America, with the hit superhero film’s debut on disc shutting out much of the competition at retailers, most of which offered a variety of promotions and exclusives centered on the film.

Target offered copies of the Blu-ray and 3D combo packs with an exclusive bonus disc containing a 90-minute documentary about how Marvel studios created the cinematic universe of The Avengers. Target’s editions included exclusive box art on the slipcovers.

Walmart offered the Avengers Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with an "Avengers" comic book.

Best Buy, which had midnight openings to let fans get their hands on the discs early, offered a special collector’s set of the film for $69.99, which includes a lighted lenticular case, a lithograph card, an Avengers guidebook, a $30 Sideshow Collectibles gift card and a copy of the 3D Blu-ray combo pack. The set was listed as in-store only with no online availability.

Other Avengers-themed deals at Best Buy included $10 off Avengers merchandise with purchase of the film, and sales of the precursor films that led up to The Avengers.

In non-Avengers promotions, Best Buy offered an exclusive Batman figurine and a bonus digital comic book with the Blu-ray of Warner’s new Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 direct-to-video animated adaptation of the classic Frank Miller graphic novel. The Blu-ray was offered at $19.99 with the figure and $14.99 without it.

Also, Best Buy used its CinemaNow service to entice fans of Prometheus, offering instant HD streaming of the film now with $14.99 preorders of the Oct. 11 Blu-ray release from Fox.

Target offered an exclusive Q&A with the DVD of the first season of Fox’s “American Horror Story.”

Finally, “Harry Potter” fans looking to complete their set of Ultimate Collector’s Editions of the films can get the Year 7 boxed set exclusively at Target. The set includes Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1 and Part 2 and the last two making of the saga documentaries for about $50.
