Report: Not All Capable Households Will Use Internet TV Services2 Jun, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey
Approximately 250 million homes will access over-the-top, or OTT, video services on their HDTVs by 2016, up from 106 million in 2010, according to a new forecast from The Diffusion Group.
However, 488 million households will have the hardware and broadband services in place to access those services, meaning only 51% actually take advantage of OTT video, the research firm said.
“In 2009, net-based TV video services were few and far between,” said Colin Dixon, senior partner with The Diffusion Group. “Today, when a consumer connects a smart TV, a Blu-ray player or any other video platform to the Internet, they will find a wealth of TV-optimized content and applications at their disposal.”
Dixon said he expects game consoles to continue to dominate among connected devices, with connected HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players following.
