Starting Oct. 18, Walmart’s Vudu began including 7.1 Dolby surround sound on some streaming videos, with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides the first title to include the feature, Vudu and Dolby announced.
“[Consumers] will be able to enjoy 7.1 surround as if they were in a movie theater or enjoying a Blu-ray Disc,” said John Couling, VP of products and platforms for Dolby Laboratories.
More than 30 theatrical films have been mixed with 7.1 sound, and more titles with the feature are expected on Vudu in the next few weeks, he added. Dolby is in talks with other distribution outlets about offering 7.1 streaming titles, and broadcast 7.1 isn’t too far off either, Couling noted.
“It’s a major milestone for us,” he said. “Today is just the first step. We look forward to having the opportunity to work with additional content providers to deliver premium-quality 7.1 surround sound to more consumers.”
Dolby debuted 7.1 in mid-2010 with the theatrical release of Toy Story 3, and Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 audio currently is available on some Blu-ray players, HDTVs, set-tops, receivers and mobile phones.
