Projections: 'Gods of Egypt' Praying to Supplant 'Deadpool'
6 Jun, 2016 By: John Latchem
Lionsgate's Gods of Egypt leads a pack of notable newcomers looking to push Deadpool off its perch as the No. 1 home video seller the week ending June 6.
The fantasy actioner from director Alex Proyas has been the subject of a lot of hype, though didn't strike a chord with audiences during its theatrical run, pulling in just $31 million domestically against a $140 million budget. Its big-vision scale could give it more traction with home audiences, where it is already trending to at least top the rental charts for the week.
Other new releases include Sony Pictures' Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and a pair of modest performers from Universal: the crime drama Triple 9 and the Jesse Owens biopic Race.
It would come as no surprise, however, for Fox's Deadpool to top the disc sales charts for a fourth consecutive week (at which point it will definitely be supplanted next week by Disney's Zootopia).
The rental chart, with Gods of Egypt on top, sees Joy moving into a high spot after the end of its month-long holdback at Redbox kiosks.
