New Software Enables PS3 to Stream Online Video

22 Jun, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Orb Networks has begun shipping software that allows PlayStation 3 users to stream online video to their television.

Originally bowed at the Consumer Electronics Show as software enabling Blu-ray Disc owners to stream content to their TV, the current $19.99 disc (still dubbed Orb BR) is only for PS3. A Blu-ray edition is expected to ship in July.

The Orb BR software essentially transforms the PS3 into a virtual media player linking TV shows and movies from Hulu, HuluPlus, Netflix, Amazon VOD and YouTube, among others, to the TV. Users can also access stored DivX/XviD files, home movies and photos.

Users insert the Orb BR disk into their PS3, download the free Orb Caster software to their PC or Mac, and then download the free Orb controller app to their smart device (from the App Store or Android Marketplace).

The software represents a cost-effective alternative to the Oakland, Calif.-based company’s $99 Orb TV media player and $79 Orb Music Player — the latter linking iTunes and Pandora to any home media center.
