Projections: Flying to the Top of the 'Throne'

23 Feb, 2015 By: John Latchem

The new releases of Feb. 17 present a slew of scenarios for a potential top-selling disc.

Three of the titles have huge buzz behind them, starting with HBO's Game of Thrones: The Complete Fourth Season. The TV show has a huge fanboy following and often performs well on the sales chart despite the higher price point for a TV on disc title. It is likely to be the top title in terms of revenue, though its unit tally will be interesting to track.

Another potential winner is Fox's Birdman, the newly minted Best Picture Oscar winner that had a well-timed DVD and Blu-ray release in the week leading up to the ceremony.

There's also Sony Pictures' The Interview, the notorious film at the center of the cyber attack against the studio. Retailers devoted significant space to the title — Walmart in particular had nearly half its new-release endcap devoted to the title — although its widespread availability through digital channels will likely detract from its appeal on disc.

On the rental chart, Universal's Lucy came off its 28-day holdback from Redbox and should rise up to the top spot. Anchor Bay's St. Vincent has been trending as the top-renting new release, as Birdman is subjected to the Fox-mandated 28-day delay.
