Xbox Adds IndieFlix, SmartGlass for ‘Game of Thrones’

27 Mar, 2013 By: Chris Tribbey

Xbox is adding a half dozen new applications to its Live platform, including IndieFlix and a “Game of Thrones” SmartGlass companion app for HBO Go.

Xbox SmartGlass for “Game of Thrones: Season 3” allows users to access more information about the show live on a second screen, including a Windows 8 tablet or iPad. Added information includes interactive maps, character guides, commentaries and behind-the-scenes bonuses.

Subscription-based independent streaming service IndieFlix is also coming to Xbox Live, offering film festival winners, features, documentaries, independent shorts and Web series.

“We think the Xbox audience ‘gets’ independent film,” said Scilla Andreen, IndieFlix CEO and co-founder. “We believe they’ll love the original content and appreciate the raw creativity of these fiercely independent artists who work outside of the ‘system’ to make the movies they want to make — no need for permission or bowing to someone else’s editorial control.”

Also coming to Xbox Live:

• MLB.TV Refresh, which allows users to access more than 1,430 Major League Baseball games live or on demand, and provides game highlights and recaps, and previews.

• Revision 3, an independent, free online video service that offers hit TV programming. The application works with Kinect, the Xbox 360’s voice and motion-control device.

• Popcornflix, the ad-supported streaming site owned by Screen Media Ventures.

• Toys “R” Us Movies, which offers on-demand rentals and electronic sellthrough of movies and TV shows geared toward children and families.
