Match for match, this retrospective on the career of pro-wrestler Randy “Macho Man” Savage offers probably the best lineup of any WWE DVD collection. It’s too bad then that the host segments used to introduce the matches are absolutely horrible, possibly the worst yet for a WWE DVD.

In between matches, WWE mainstays Matt Striker and the luscious Maria Kanellis, when not awkwardly flirting with each other, give wooden performances reading the teleprompter to offer insights on the Macho Man’s career. Diversions like this are what the “chapter advance” button was made for; only Maria’s pedigree as a Playboy cover girl make these parts the least bit bearable.

But it’s the matches that move the product, and this set has nearly every pivotal moment in the Macho Man’s controversial career. It includes six consecutive WrestleMania matches, beginning with Savage’s immortal contest against Ricky Steamboat at WrestleMania III, considered by many one of the greatest pro-wrestling matches of all time.

Also included are his two WWE title victories, his hugely entertaining 1991 retirement match against The Ultimate Warrior, his subsequent “wedding” to Miss Elizabeth, and two of his WCW title wins. Extras include a trove of Macho Man promos. The awesome display is the very definition of nostalgia.

Not touched upon, for obvious reasons, is the rumored behind-the-scenes feud between Savage and WWE owner Vince McMahon, which allegedly delayed this set for years.
