The idea that there is no honor among thieves couldn’t be more entertainingly expressed than in the Korean actioner The Thieves.
The sleek-looking Casino heist, planned by a group of professional thieves, each a master of his or her particular job, might at first seem a lot like Ocean’s Eleven. But there’s a lot more to this heist movie than just pulling off a big score.
There’s rivalry, revenge, double-crossing and even romance within the two groups of thieves, who come together to steal the $20 million Tear of the Sun diamond. Among these bad guys, there are badder guys and bad guys who actually seem good or, at least, not as bad you had thought, and vice versa.
Throw in some car chases, shoot-outs, explosions, and all the jumping and hanging from wires off the sides of buildings, and it’s a nonstop action trip. That and the many plot twists during the last third of the film keep viewers on their toes.
And unlike many American films, not all the main characters make it out alive.
The film, directed by Dong-Hoon Choi, runs more than two hours long. But if you can make it through the long beginning, which sets up the characters and the plot (so pay close attention!), then you’re in for a wild and fun ride.
The ensemble cast of all-star Asian actors impresses not only with their acting, but also with their stunt work, which they did themselves. The making-of featurette shows just how difficult some of these scenes were and how brave the actors were to take them on.
