Walmart Bowing ‘Madden NFL 25’ at Midnight

Top-selling football video game marks 25th anniversary

Walmart, beginning at midnight, will begin selling Madden NFL 25, Electronic Arts’ venerable video football game incorporating the game’s marquee players long before the advent of fantasy leagues.

The retail behemoth is holding in-store giveaways at select locations prior to midnight for the $59.96 game, compatible separately with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Walmart is also offering a $10 electronic gift card to Xbox 360 purchasers, who take picture of their receipt and text it to 76477 along with the word "MADDEN." Once verified, consumers will receive a text with a reward code valid for a $10 Walmart eGift Card.

"It gives them a way to look at a team and see what [their opponents] do," Madden told USA Today. "The players love to keep their skills sharp in the game. Obviously, it's not like practicing and it's not like watching game film, but it is being involved in the game. It gets your head in the game and makes you think."

Launched in 1988 for the Apple II as a possible aid to football coaches, Madden NFL took off, and today generates about $240 million in revenue annually for EA, according to Wedbush Securities’ Michael Pachter.

It remains the No. 2 sport video game on the market after soccer’s FIFA 13, which has sold more than 14 million units, according to Pachter.

GameStop is also holding midnight launch parties at 3,000 stores nationwide.
