Walmart Pushing ‘Blu’ on Black Friday15 Nov, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Walmart will offer a wireless Blu-ray Disc player for $69 and more than 100 Blu-ray and DVD movies priced starting at $5 and $1.99, respectively, on Black Friday, according to a 24-page circular revealed online.
The annual post-Thanksgiving (Nov. 26) retail holiday typically ushers in the holiday shopping season with one-day specials and deep discounts.
The Bentonville, Ark.-based retail behemoth will sell the Magnavox MBP5130/F7 wireless LAN Blu-ray player with Vudu movie download functionality for $69 — heretofore the lowest nationally advertised price for an Internet-connected Blu-ray player.
Walmart, which currently sells a non-connected Magnavox BD player for $78, will also offer the connected LG BD550 player for $94 (originally $179.99) with Vudu. The retailer earlier this year acquired Vudu’s transactional video-on-demand (VOD) service for a reported $100 million.
Walmart in 2003 helped energize sales of DVD players when it offered a $39 player on Black Friday.
Blu-ray movies include Batman Begins, Legion, Ice Age, Hot Tub Time Machine Unrated, Gran Torino, Get Him to the Greek, Live Free or Die Hard, Lord of the Rings: The Followship of the Ring, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Marmaduke, among others.
