Walmart Nov. 2 said it will offer a free Digital Copy of Toy Story 3 on its Vudu download service with the purchase of the popular Disney/Pixar movie on DVD or Blu-ray Disc.
Toy Story 3, which grossed more than $1 billion in global ticket sales and ranks No. 1 at the domestic box office, hits physical and digital retail and rental channels today.
Vudu, which Walmart acquired earlier this year for a reported $100 million, currently offers new release transactional VOD movies through its software, which is embedded in numerous third-party consumer electronics devices, Blu-ray Disc players, and soon the Boxee Box.
“This holiday season the leader in children’s entertainment, working with the world’s largest retailer and the world’s best streaming movie service, are making it easier than ever to get one of the year’s best movies,” said a Vudu spokesperson.
Separately, Amazon said it is expanding its Disc+ On Demand service to include a free Digital Copy of more than 10,000 new release and catalog movies accessed through its Amazon VOD service.
When customers purchase a Disc+ On Demand title on Blu-ray or DVD from Amazon, a digital copy of the movie is automatically added to their Amazon Video On Demand video library.
Customers can watch the digital copy on a Mac, PC, Internet-connected TVs, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes.
“Customers love instant gratification, and this program allows customers to watch Disc+ On Demand titles instantly, without having to wait for their DVD or Blu-ray to arrive in the mail,” said Steve Oliver, category leader for Amazon DVD.
