Wal-Mart to Bow $78 Blu-ray Player on Black Friday

18 Nov, 2009 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Wal-Mart Nov. 18 revealed it would offer on Black Friday a Magnavox Blu-ray Disc player without Internet connectivity for $78, which is so far the lowest advertised retail price for the high-definition packaged-media hardware.

In doing so, the Bentonville, Ark.-based retail behemoth could repeat history when it bowed a $39 DVD player on Black Friday in 2003 — a move many believe helped make the DVD player the most successful consumer electronics product in history.

Wal-Mart has historically offered the Magnavox BD player at teaser prices, including a year ago on Black Friday for $128.

“We promised amazing savings each week in November and December and will deliver on that promise for our customers,” said Gary Severson, SVP of entertainment for Wal-Mart. “Shoppers who want to get a jump start this weekend can find values in entertainment they would expect to see after Thanksgiving Day.”
