Telco Operator Bows DVD/VOD App

SureWest Communications will let subscribers buy select new-release Warner movies on disc the same day they are available on VOD

A Sacramento, Calif.-based telecommunications company has launched a new platform that allows subscribers to purchase new-release movies electronically and on disc.

Beginning in its Kansas City, Mo., market, SureWest Communications is incorporating third-party VODlink 5.0 technology (dubbed “Watch & Buy”) from SeaChange International that allows users to purchase physical or digital copies of movies through a set-top box.

Movies displayed on the VOD screen include a DVD symbol allowing the user to purchase either electronic or packaged media copies — the latter completed through a fulfillment house.

Initial Warner titles include Arthur, Hall Pass, Something Borrowed, Sucker Punch, Red Riding Hood and Unknown.

“SureWest is operating in an intensely competitive market in Kansas City, and we see our upgrade to VODlink 5.0 and the launch of Watch & Buy as a significant step in differentiating the services and experiences we can offer to current and potential subscribers,” VP and CTO Ken Johnson said in a statement.

SureWest has more than 105,000 residential customers and nearly 8,000 business customers in Sacramento, Kansas City and Missouri.
