Set-top Shipments Up Sharply in China

Overall set-top box shipments in China were up 30% in 2009 to 160.5 million, marking the country as the world’s largest set-top box manufacturer, according to a new report from iSuppli.
“The strong performance of the China STB market can be directly correlated to the hearty consumption of LCD-TVs in the country,” said Vincent Gu, senior analyst for China research at iSuppli. “Despite the economic crisis, China’s LCD-TV market amounted to 29 million units in 2009, up a hefty 124 % from 13 million in 2008, and will reach 39 million units this year. “
Gu credited government policies promoting the sale of home appliances in rural areas, the government’s purchase of LCD panels to create economies of scale, and an anticipated nationwide switch from analog as reasons for the growth.
