Director Joss Whedon, who is currently helming the second "Avengers" movie for Marvel Studios, is releasing an indie film straight to transactional video-on-demand.

In Your Eyes, which stars Zoe Kazan, Micheal Stahl-David, Jennifer Grey and Nikki Reed, among others, is a supernatural love story directed by Brin Hill and is now available to rent for $5 for 72 hours on Vimeo.com’s VOD platform.

In a 40-second video message delivered April 20 at the movie's Tribeca Film Festival debut from the set of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Whedon, who wrote and executive-produced the film, characterized the release strategy as “exciting.”

“We get to explore yet another new form of distribution,” Whedon said.

Whedon, also known for TV shows “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” and “Dollhouse,” among others, is an early adopter to digital distribution. In 2008, Whedon produced one of the first original Web series, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.”

Greg Clayman, GM of audience networks at Vimeo, said Eyes represents the platform's highest profile VOD to date.

"The fact that people like Joss are starting to think about direct distribution and connecting directly with their fans is exciting for us, and a trend we think will continue," Clayman told Gigaom.com.
