Kaleidescape Offering Music Concert Videos

5 Jul, 2017 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Kaleidescape, the challenged high-performance movie server manufacturer and distributor, has inked a distribution deal with Eagle Rock Entertainment to distribute its portfolio of music concert videos and documentaries, including performances by Paul McCartney, Katy Perry, Monty Python, Peter Gabriel, the Rolling Stones, Madonna, The Who and Queen, among others.

The videos (50 currently) are available through the Kaleidescape Movie Store. Another 50 titles will be added through the summer. Each individual song is bookmarked so that Kaleidescape’s Play Song feature can immediately initiate playback of any song in any concert.

“As the consumer viewing experience evolves, Kaleidescape’s one-of-a-kind system provides an innovative way to enjoy our concerts,” Rob Gill, GM at Eagle Rock Entertainment, said in a statement.

Kaleidescape’s movie store, with more than 11,000 movies and 2,000 TV seasons licensed from studios, includes the largest selection of 4K Ultra HD and 4K HDR titles.

The latter features the 4K-capable “Encore” line, including the Strato movie players. Strato is equipped with an internal 6TB or 10TB hard drive to store up to 180 4K Ultra HD movies, 330 Blu-ray Discs or 1,500 DVDs. It can be used standalone, and can also play movies from a Terra movie server, or from another Strato movie player.

Separately, the Terra Movie Server can store up to 40TB of movies in the home network.

The license agreement follows months of turmoil as Kaleidescape contemplated shutting down due to changing consumer entertainment habits and internal economics.

In a recent interview, founder and CEO Cheena Srinivasan attributed the company’s challenges largely to supplier issues. Srinivasan said he personally visited with myriad high-performance consumer electronics retailers to bolster their continued support for the product.

At CEDIA 2017 in September in San Diego, Kaleidescape will be promoting updates that meld movie collections from separate platforms into a unified server.

Kaleidescape has license agreements with Warner Bros., Lionsgate, NBC Universal, Sony Pictures, Disney, 20th Century Fox, Magnolia Home Entertainment, The Orchard, Gravitas Ventures, K2 Communications, Dreamworks, RLJ Entertainment, Music Box Films, Cinedigm, Kino Lorber, Focus Features and Shout Factory, among others.
