Tally exceeds fiscal year-end target of 5 million units

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Feb. 18 said it has sold 5.3 million PlayStation 4 units since its Nov. 15 launch through Feb. 8 — topping the fiscal full-year (ending March 31) sales goal early. The next-generation video game system goes on sale in Japan Feb. 22.

“I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,” Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said in a statement. “We are delighted that according to The NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans.”

Microsoft said it sold 3 million Xbox One systems through Dec. 31. The rival gaming system, which includes a Blu-ray Disc drive, actually sold more units than the PS4 in December, which some observers attributed to PS4 supply shortages.
