Sony: PS4 Already Delivering Profits

28 May, 2014 By: Chris Tribbey

After initially selling the PlayStation 4 (PS4) at a loss, Sony Corp. is already turning a profit off the console six months after it first launched in North America, Sony CEO and president Kazuo Hirai said during a recent company presentation.

“From a profitability perspective, PS4 is also already contributing profit on a hardware unit basis, establishing a very different business framework from that of previous platform businesses,” he said.

The PlayStation 4 has launched in 72 countries and regions and has sold 20.5 million units of the nearly 50 titles available for the system, with more than 7 million PS4s sold as of mid-April.

Hirai said that worldwide approximately half of PS4 users are registered to the PlayStation Plus subscription service, and that the number of active users on the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network exceeds 52 million. Sales from Sony’s network business — including games, music and video — exceeded 200 billion yen in fiscal 2013.

“Many of our users now enjoy an array of game, music and video content via the network,” he said. “And our PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets that lets players share their PS4 experience to their mobile devices, is also proving hugely popular, with the total number of downloads already exceeding 4.5 million.”

Hirai said Sony would begin distributing PS3 games via streaming to U.S. PS4 users this summer.
