Sony PlayStation Eyes Latin America

20 Feb, 2009 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Seeking to expand upon a global install base of more than 21 million units for the PlayStation 3 video game system, Sony Computer Entertainment America Feb. 20 said it would expand the PlayStation business and brand to the 13 countries representing Latin America.

Through a distribution partnership with Sony Latin America, PlayStation services include access to the Web-enabled PlayStation Network, a free entertainment network service that delivers original content; firmware updates and related online services.

In the coming weeks, PlayStation.com will introduce a localized Web site providing the most current news and information in Spanish relevant to users throughout Latin America. Features of the site include access to the PlayStation blog; product pages for the PS3, PlayStation 2 and PSP; and PlayStation Network content and public forums.

Latin American users will also have the opportunity to take advantage of applications such as the PS3 Bluetooth headset and PlayStation wireless keypad that enable users to connect and communicate with each other in and out of games.

“This expansion is the direct result of us listening closely to our community, and we’re proud to deliver premium hardware and software services that will allow them to easily connect, play and communicate with one another,” said Mark Stanley, director and general manager, Latin America, Sony Computer Entertainment America.
