NPD: Physical Game Spending Down 21% in 2012

5 Feb, 2013 By: Chris Tribbey

American consumer spending on physical games was down 21% in 2012 to $8.88 billion, from $11.25 billion in 2011, according to research from The NPD Group.

Digital game spending rose 16% to $5.92 billion. Overall spending on games was down 9% to $14.8 billion.

“When including all other forms of content spending outside of new physical games, the 2012 U.S. games market was more than twice as large as the total spending on new physical games alone,” said Liam Callahan, industry analyst for NPD. “There were divergent trends when looking at content spending in 2012 as a whole, with a decrease of 21% in spending on physical content, while digital content spending grew 16%; both formats combined for a total decline of 9% for the year.”
