NPD: January Gaming Sales Down 13%14 Feb, 2013 By: Chris Tribbey
Overall video game industry sales were down 13% to $667.8 million during January, compared with $765.6 million during the same month in 2012, according to data from The NPD Group.
The drop was due to a 17% drop in hardware sales ($1164 million vs. $197.7 million) and a 19% drop in software sales ($298.5 million vs. $369.8 million). Xbox 360 led hardware sales in January, the 18th consecutive month the console led overall hardware sales.
“[PlayStation 3] software unit sales were only down 2% … while [Nintendo] 3DS unit sales only decreased 4% faring relatively better than other platforms over the same-time period,” said NPD Group industry analyst Liam Callahan. “While the number of new SKUs was relatively consistent for January 2013 compared to January 2012, performance of new SKUs this year versus last was six times as high, lifted by the success of titles like DMC: Devil May Cry and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.”
