NPD: Gamers Playing Online More

2 May, 2013 By: Chris Tribbey

Seventy-two percent of American gamers are playing online, up 5% from 2012, according to a new study by The NPD Group.

They’re also playing more hours per week, 9% more year-over-year, the study said.

“Besides the size of the gaming audience and sales performance, one of the key metrics for the industry to watch is the time gamers spend playing games,” said Liam Callahan, industry analyst for NPD. “This study found that the overall amount of time spent gaming, and time spent gaming online increased across virtually every type of device, and notably so, versus 2012.”

PC gaming is being played by 68%, up 4% year-over-year, and mobile gaming was up 12%. Sixty-two percent of gamers said they preferred playing physical media.

“While many gamers prefer games in the physical format, the increased availability of digital content paired with a greater amount of connected devices has driven an increase in the number of consumers going online to access the content they want,” Callahan said.
