Overall video game sales fell 15% in February, to $1.26 billion, compared with the same month in 2009. Hardware sales fell 20%, with software sales dropping 15% in February.
“Honestly, I had expected the industry to perform somewhat better this month,” said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. “Nonetheless, strong new releases and Easter gift-buying bode well for industry performance in March."
The Xbox 360 sold the most units in February, at 422,000, with the Wii at 397,900 and the PS3 at 360,100 units sold.
“Xbox 360 nabbed the top spot among the three console systems for the first time since September 2007, when Halo 3 was released,” she said. “PS3 enjoyed a 30% increase over last year, even while retail supply is reported to remain constrained.”
Top games were spread across all platforms, with Xbox 360’s Bioshock 2 at No. 1.
“The top 10 list this month is quite balanced between the three console platforms, with three each for the PS3 and Wii platforms, and four for the 360,” Frazier said.
