Vin Diesel Takes to Facebook Lauding 'Riddick' Disc Sales

29 Jan, 2014 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Vin Diesel Jan. 28 posted a video on his Facebook page celebrating the top disc ranking for Riddick, the sci-fi actioner in which the "Fast & Furious" actor reprises his role as space’s ultimate antihero.

Dressed in camouflage shorts and white tank top, Diesel dances to Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” before stopping and speaking into the camera.

“Universal just called me and told me that Riddick is No. 1 on the DVD charts,” Diesel said. “There is no way in the world Riddick would have been made without you guys. You know that.”

The actor and producer of the follow up to Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick goes on to say how hard it was in 2012 to get the ‘R’-rated, special-effects film made on what he called a low ($38 million) budget.

“It’s a win for all of us. And I really, really, really, really thank you so much,” Diesel said, adding that Universal wants to make a fourth installment of the franchise. “I’m so excited.”

Riddick was released on disc Jan. 14 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment and ranked No. 1 in disc sales for the week of Jan. 12-18 on Rentrak's "retail essentials" and "home video essentials" tracking services, which are based on estimated consumer spending per data collected. Nielsen VideoScan's First Alert chart for the week of Jan. 13-19 also saw more copies of Riddick sold than any other film, when sales of the "Riddick" franchise collection boxed set were factored in.
