Universal Bows New Flipper Disc Titles13 Apr, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Universal Studios Home Entertainment April 13 said it would release three new titles on the dual-format (“flipper”) Blu-ray/DVD disc, including Out of Africa 25th Anniversary Edition, Traffic and The Jackal on April 27.
Universal in January unveiled the strategy to repurpose catalog titles by giving consumers a Blu-ray version on one side and DVD on the other. Initial “flipper” disc releases featured The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.
Out of Africa, which won seven Oscars, stars Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, and was directed by the late Sydney Pollack, was first released on DVD in 2000 and never on Blu-ray. The BD release, in addition to BD-Live and My Scenes bonus material, features the theatrical trailer, director’s commentary and documentary "A Song of Africa" on the making of the film.
Traffic, released in 2001, won four Oscars, including best director Steven Soderbergh and best supporting actor Benicio Del Toro. It has been released separately on DVD and Blu-ray. The dual-format release includes deleted scenes, theatrical trailer, behind-the-scenes featurette “Inside Traffic,” BD-Live and My Scenes.
The Jackal, a 1997 remake of 1973 film The Day of the Jackal, stars Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. Special features include the theatrical trailer, director’s commentary, “The Making of The Jackal,” BD-Live and My Scenes. It has never been released on Blu-ray.
The new dual-format releases retail for $26.98 each.
