Universal to Bow Blu ‘Back to the Future’ Trilogy28 Jun, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release all three “Back to the Future” movies on Blu-ray Disc Oct. 26 in honor of the franchise’s 25th anniversary.
The Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy will be available as a three-disc Blu-ray set at $79.98 and a four-DVD set at $49.98 and will include more than two hours of new bonus material.
Starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, among others, Back to the Future featured Fox as teenager Marty McFly whose voyage across the space-time continuum spent 11 weeks atop the U.S. box office. The films also star Lea Thompson (“Caroline in the City”), Crispin Glover (Hot Tub Time Machine), Thomas F. Wilson (“Big Love”), Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas), Billy Zane (Titanic), Elijah Wood (the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy) and Mary Steenburgen (The Proposal) as well as 1980s musical acts Huey Lewis and ZZ Top.
Unique to the Blu-ray release is featurette “Back to the Future Night,” hosted by Leslie Nielson. The 30-minute special aired on NBC prior to the first television screening of Back to the Future and was available on previous DVD releases of the trilogy.
New extras for the Blu-ray and DVD releases include a six-part retrospective documentary, a "Physics of Back to the Future" featurette and storyboards for an unused ending sequence. The discs also will contain extras from previous DVD releases, such as deleted scenes; a Q&A with Fox, director Robert Zemeckis and producer Bob Gale; behind-the-scenes material; and footage from Back to the Future: The Ride.
Similar to other Universal Blu-ray releases, the Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy will feature U-Control, which allows viewers to access additional content while watching the movies, and “pocket Blu,” enabling viewers to remotely control a networked Blu-ray player via an Apple iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Blackberry Android, Windows and Macintosh computers.
