Cult classic The Big Lebowski will make its high-definition debut Aug. 16 (prebook June 28), when Universal Studios Home Entertainment releases the comedy on Blu-ray Disc.

The film stars Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges (True Grit) as an unemployed slacker and avid bowler, known as “The Dude,” in a twisted case of mistaken identity that involves a rug, ransom money and trippy dream sequences.

The supporting cast includes John Goodman (“Roseanne”), Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right), Steve Buscemi (“Boardwalk Empire”), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt) and John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?).

“Since its creation by Ethan and Joel Coen in 1998, The Big Lebowski has transformed from a fan favorite into one of Hollywood’s most celebrated cultural phenomenons,” said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “This spectacular new, limited-edition Blu-ray combines the most extensive behind-the-scenes materials to date with the latest Blu-ray technology, giving devoted fans and newcomers alike a chance to experience the brilliant all-star cast, outrageous storyline and unforgettable quotes like never before.”

The Big Lebowski Limited Edition ($29.98) includes a digital copy and a 28-page companion book featuring Bridges’ photography from the set, a film timeline, trivia and an exclusive interview with Jeff Dowd, the real-life inspiration behind The Dude.

The Blu-ray is loaded with exclusive features, such as “Mark It Dude,” which tallies all of the “F-bombs” and “Dude-isms,” and “Worthy Adversaries: What’s My Line Trivia,” which quizzes viewers about the dialogue as the film plays.

Featurettes include “The Dude’s Life,” a retrospective look at the cast’s performance; “The Dude Abides: The Big Lebowski Ten Years Later,” a conversation with the cast about the film’s cultural significance; and a making-of featurette, with interviews by the Coen brothers, among others.
