Thirteen years since the original American Pie in 1999 and the franchise is already waxing nostalgic about itself. American Reunion is the fourth big-screen installment in the series, not counting four direct-to-video spin-offs, and gives audiences a good chance to catch up with the characters as they settle into adulthood, returning home for a high school reunion.

What’s fascinating about these films is the way they’re able to impart a certain sweetness in between all the gross-out humor, nudity and sex jokes. Reunion offers a few good laughs while reminding audiences what they enjoyed about the original, which is referenced early and often with sight gags and musical cues. But for those who may not have seen the earlier movies, Reunion is a serviceable comedy about dealing with various thirtysomething crises and relationship issues.

In their informative commentary track, co-directors and co-writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg discuss the role the original American Pie had in influencing their careers. The duo were in college with a dream of reviving the 1980s-style ‘R’-rated comedy, and when the first film came out they fell in love with it.

The commentary is among a plethora of extras on the Blu-ray that should more than satisfy fans of the franchise.

In addition to various deleted and extended scenes, cast interviews and behind-the-scenes featurettes, the movie comes with an “Out of Control” track in which some of the actors pop up on screen to discuss their favorite scenes.

An added treat is the “American Reunion Yearbook,” a guide to the various characters with video clips of their misadventures from the other movies.
