Anchor Bay Inks With UFC7 Jul, 2009 By: Chris Tribbey
Anchor Bay Entertainment has inked a deal with Ultimate Fighting Championship to distribute UFC titles on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
Previously First Look Studios had been releasing UFC titles. Canadian distribution would start in 2010, according to Anchor Bay.
“It’s going to be a great franchise for us,” said Anchor Bay president Bill Clark. “The bulk of these releases are going to be packed with special features.”
Weigh-in events, behind-the-scenes footage and other bonuses are expected to accompany the fight footage, Clark said. Best-of compilations, fight-ending highlights and profiles are other DVD extra possibilities.
Anchor Bay plans to release about a dozen UFC titles a year, and Clark said it’s possible every one will see a Blu-ray release along with DVD.
“We look at the Blu-ray opportunity for this programming to be phenomenal,” Clark said. “A lot of fans like to watch sports in high-def.”
While no specific release dates have been announced, one of the first titles to be released by Anchor Bay will be UFC 100, which takes place July 11 and is available on Pay-Per-View.
“Anchor Bay Entertainment is one of the leading distributors of fitness DVDs and has released some of the top independent titles in Hollywood,” said UFC president Dana White. “Working with Anchor Bay, fans can get the most exciting live event in the world on DVD or Blu-ray, and see the greatest fights ever from UFC.”
UFC has more than a dozen Pay-Per-View events a year, broadcasting to more than 100 countries in 17 different languages.
