‘Tintin,’ ‘Beast Wars’ Among Latest Shout! Factory Deals

19 May, 2011 By: John Latchem

Shout! Factory has signed a multiyear agreement with Nelvana Enterprises for the U.S. home entertainment rights to the animated series “The Adventures of Tintin.”

The show is based on the “Tintin” comic strips and books created by Belgian artist Hergé and depicts the adventures of the young investigative reporter Tintin and his faithful dog, Snowy. Tintin stories first appeared in 1929 and have been depicted in graphic novels, radio series, stage plays and TV shows. “The Adventures of Tintin,” produced by Nelvana and Ellipsanime Productions, aired for 39 episodes on HBO in 1991 and 1992.

A Shout! Factory press release referred to the show as “one of the most endearing animated series of all time.”

Shout! Factory has yet to announce its release plans for the title, but they will likely be timed to coincide with the December 2011 release of the big-screen CGI adaptation The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson.

“Nelvana is pleased to partner with Shout! Factory to bring Tintin’s classic tales of worldwide adventure and intrigue back into the homes and hearts of American families, especially given the excitement surrounding the soon-to-be released 3D feature film,” said Colin Bohm, managing director of Nelvana Enterprises.

Separately, Shout! Factory announced release plans for new “Transformers” and “Mystery Science Theater 3000” boxed sets.

Due June 7 is Transformers: Beast Wars — Season One, a four-DVD set at $29.93. The set contains the first 26 episodes from the 1996-99 “Transformers” series, a CGI follow-up to the 1980s “Generation One” cartoon. The show depicts groups of good and evil robots fighting for resources on ancient Earth using their abilities to transform into animals.

In addition, Shout! Factory through its ShoutFactoryStore.com website is exclusively selling Transformers: Beast Wars — The Complete Series as an eight-DVD set for $49.99. The set includes a 12-page booklet, art galleries and a 24-page comic book prequel.

ShoutFactoryStore.com also is taking preorders for Transformers: The Japanese Collection, listed with a July 12 street date at $99.99 (the site offers a $10 discount). Fans who order the set online can receive a limited-edition lithograph.

The Japanese Collection comprises three series: “Headmasters,” “Super-God Masterforce” and “Victory.” “Headmasters” will be available separately July 5 at $24.98.
