Time Life Revisits 'China Beach'28 Feb, 2013 By: John Latchem
The latest vintage TV series to get the deluxe DVD treatment from Time Life will be “China Beach.”
Timed for the show’s 25th anniversary, the 21-DVD China Beach: The Complete Series set marks the first time the series will be available on home video. The set includes all 62 episodes from the 1988-91 show, which aired on ABC, plus more than 10 hours of exclusive bonus features.
“China Beach” chronicled the exploits of a U.S. Army field hospital during the Vietnam War, and starred Dana Delany, Marg Helgenberger, Michael Boatman, Robert Picardo and Ricki Lake. The critically acclaimed series scored 29 Emmy nominations in total, and wins in the Best Actress category for Delany (1989, 1992) and Supporting Actress for Helgenberger (1990).
Time Life spent more than a year clearing the rights to hundreds of songs used on the show, meaning the DVD set will include nearly all the music from the original broadcasts, including the title song “Reflections” by Diana Ross & the Supremes.
The set comes in deluxe packaging with metallic artwork and removable dog tags, along with a 36-page collector’s book. Extras include commentaries, new interviews and featurettes, including footage from the December 2012 cast reunion, and rare behind-the-scenes footage from the final episode.
The $199.95 set is now available for preorder at ChinaBeachonDVD.com. Hardcore fans can pick up a special 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition for $274.95, which includes three scripts autographed by the cast and key production personnel, plus four 8x10 color photos of the original cast.
