Infinity Offers Mama Cass TV Special21 Jul, 2009 By: John Latchem
Infinity Entertainment is timing a DVD release of a long-lost variety show special to the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. The Mama Cass Television Program streets Aug. 25 at $14.98.
In 1969, Mama Cass Elliot of The Mamas and the Papas recorded a pilot for a variety show that aired as a colorful ABC special, celebrating both music and “flower power.” It never aired again.
The 65-minute show features rare solo vocal performances by Elliot of “California Dreamin” and “Monday, Monday,” as well as renditions of “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” “River of Life,” “I Can Dream Can’t I?” and the Motown hit “Dancing in the Street.”
The show features guest performances by Joni Mitchell, John Sebastian and Mary Travers, and such guest stars as Buddy Hackett, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain.
Bonus footage includes a duet by Cass and Sammy Davis Jr. of “I Dig Rock and Roll Music,” and a new interview with Sebastian and his reflections on Elliot, who died in 1974.
Collector’s Choice Music also is releasing on one CD Cass’ final studio recordings, Cass Elliot and The Road Is No Place for a Lady, two albums that include three previously unreleased tracks.
