DVD Success Prompts ‘Futurama’ Renewal10 Jun, 2009 By: John Latchem
Citing the show’s success on DVD, Comedy Central has ordered 26 new half-hour episodes of the animated sci-fi comedy “Futurama.”
The show joins “Family Guy” as the only series to be canceled but put back into production following strong DVD sales.
“Futurama” aired on Fox for 72 episodes from 1999 to 2003. Cable network Comedy Central acquired rerun rights in 2006 and struck a deal to produce four direct-to-video movies that would be released on DVD by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. The movies were later edited into four episodes apiece and added to Comedy Central’s rerun package. The last of these movies debuted in February.
The new episodes will be available starting in mid 2010 and shown on Comedy Central, with Fox retaining the broadcast network rights.
