Catch Emmy Nominees on DVD

16 Jul, 2009 By: John Latchem

The advent of TV DVD has made it so easy for fans to catch Emmy nominees on DVD that this year nearly every selection is available on disc in one way or another.

Among the most surprising nominees from the July 16 announcement, showcasing the synergy between DVD and TV, is the best comedy series nomination for “Family Guy,” a show that was canceled and resurrected due to strong DVD sales. The show scored two noms, with creator Seth MacFarlane earning recognition for his voiceover work.

But the biggest nominee was Universal’s “30 Rock,” with 22, including best comedy series, best actor for Alec Baldwin, best actress for Tina Fey, best supporting actress for Jane Krakowski and best supporting actor for both Tracy Morgan and breakout star Jack McBrayer. The third season of the show streets Sept. 22.

“Mad Men,” with 16 nominations, led the way among dramas, with noms for best drama series, best actor for Jon Hamm, best actress for Elizabeth Moss and best supporting actor for John Slattery. Lionsgate recently released the second season on DVD and Blu-ray amid a slew of promotional tie-ins keyed to the period piece’s unique fashion statement.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was quick to highlight nominated shows it has released on DVD, including “Damages” (seven nominations), “Breaking Bad” (five nominations) and “Rescue Me” (one nomination). Sony also will released the TV movie Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (four nominations) Sept. 8, and has the DVD rights to the Lifetime movie Maneater (one nomination).

“Emmy recognition helps sell more DVDs and gets more electronic downloads and just helps build a wider consumer interest, especially for those not already on board with a show,” said Marc Rashba, VP of worldwide marketing at SPHE.

Disney also scored a slew of nominations, most notably five noms for “Lost,” including best drama series, and five for “Grey’s Anatomy,” with three acting noms. Season five of “Grey’s Anatomy” streets Sept. 15 and season five of “Lost” streets Dec. 8, with both shows on DVD and Blu-ray.

The most-recognized title from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment was “24,” the seventh season of which was recently released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The action show earned six nominations, and a spinoff TV movie, 24: Redemption, earned five more, including best actor for Kiefer Sutherland.

Shows and movies available now on DVD from HBO Home Entertainment scored several noms, with the TV movies Grey Gardens (17 nominations) and Taking Chance (10 nominations) competing for best made-for-television movie. And the studio’s Generation Kill, available on DVD and Blu-ray, earned 11 nominations, including best miniseries, where it goes against Little Dorrit, which also scored 11 nominations and is available on DVD from BBC Video.

HBO’s “True Blood,” a top-seller on DVD and Blu-ray for its first season, was relatively shut out, earning three nominations, for its title sequence, casting and art direction.

Another cult-favorite TV show, “Battlestar Galactica,” was once again shut out of the major awards, but earned five nominations in technical categories, including direction and visual effects for the series finale. The franchise also earned a nomination for a series of webisodes. Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 and a complete-series set debut on DVD and Blu-ray July 28.
