Cartoon Network Gets ‘Real’ With ‘Total Drama Island’

Cartoon Network and Warner Home Video Aug. 18 (prebook July 14) release Total Drama Island, billed as the first animated reality competition.

The show follows 22 teens as they compete against one another in a run-down summer camp to win $100,000.

The four-DVD set ($34.99) will include all 27 episodes of the hit show, which anchored Cartoon Network’s Har Har Thursdays line-up starting in June 2008. The season finale aired Dec. 11, 2008 and set ratings records for the network. The series Web site, www.TotalDramaIsland.com, benefited from the success of the series, with more than 2 million fan avatars created within three months of the series premiere.

“The fact [kids] could virtually immerse themselves into the ‘Total Drama Island’ world was a huge deal for them and helped to heighten their engagement and deepen their affinity for the show,” said Christina Miller, VP of Cartoon Network Enterprises.

In addition, Cartoon Network Enterprises has been named the exclusive North American licensing agent for the “Total Drama” franchise, including the upcoming season, Total Drama Action. CNE will develop a licensing and merchandising program across multiple categories, including home video.

“Home entertainment is the perfect launching pad for the program because it can serve to draw in new fans who may have missed the first part of the series, and it also helps to strengthen our core fan base by serving as a refresher for them,” Miller said.

Tentative DVD extras include cast interviews and an alternate ending.
