WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — There are a lot of things you can get away with when you release something on DVD instead of cable — like full-frontal elf penis and lots of bad language.
“And Danny DeVito’s sweaty, naked butt,” added “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” actress Kaitlin Olson. “In high definition.”
Those are just a few of the treats 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has in store for fans of the popular FX show when on Nov. 17 it releases It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia: A Very Sunny Christmas direct to DVD and, a first for the show, Blu-ray Disc.
“This show has got upward trajectory, not only on the network, but with DVD sales,” said studio home entertainment president Mike Dunn at a Nov. 12 party marking the release. “It’s great for the fan base.”
Actor Charlie Day said the direct-to-DVD release allowed the cast to push boundaries they would otherwise run up against with cable.
“We knew there was a big audience for our DVDs out there, and there were certain things we wanted to try, boundaries we wanted to push,” he said. “We don’t push things just for the sake of pushing things. We do it because we think it’s funny. You can get away with a lot of things on FX, but you can’t get away with everything.
Actor Glenn Howerton said the bonus features would delight fans and that “everyone needs a Claymation weiner once in a while.”
Bonus features include deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes making-of featurette and a “Sunny Sing-A-Long.”
