CE Shipments to Triple by 2012, Study Says

31 Mar, 2009 By: Thomas K. Arnold

Just received word of an interesting new study from research house iSuppli that predicts global shipments of consumer electronics products compatible with HD--from set-top boxes and consoles to DVD and Blu-ray Disc players--will triple by 2012. The expected spike will see global shipments rise from 68.9 million units in 2008 to 202 million units in 2012. By then, 52.9% of products will be HD-compatible, up from 21.6% in 2008. The iSuppli announcement quotes senior analyst Randy Lawson as saying, "For the last 20 years, HD video has been the holy grail for consumer electronics OEMs, as well as for avid home theater fans around the world...The high-tech industry’s efforts to provide HD service to every home now are finally coming to fruition. This has resulted in an explosion of shipments of consumer-electronics devices that support HD video, from new Blu-ray Disc players to ultra-thin LCD HDTVs--and even some portable media players.”
