TLA Restructures; Will License Library and Lays Off 228 Apr, 2009 By: Billy Gil
TLA Releasing US, a subsidiary of TLA Entertainment Group specializing in gay, lesbian and arthouse content, is restructuring, citing the economic downturn. Effective immediately two members of its 17-person staff have been laid off, and the company plans to sell or license its entire 200-title library for DVD, TV and VOD.
Titles affected include recently acquired Chef’s Special, Shank and Redwoods. The reorganization does not affect the parent company’s other divisions, including TLA Releasing UK, www.tlavideo.com and TLA Video retail stores.
“It is an exciting time to re-imagine TLA Releasing in the marketplace, not only as distributors but also as a micro-studio,” said TLA Releasing head of production and development Derek Curl. “We believe that our fourth-quarter releasing slate is a strong lineup that will reaffirm the company’s worldwide brand name as a leader in gay cinema.”
Curl said TLA plans to return in the fourth quarter leaner and more effective, shifting the focus to “event-oriented titles.” He said that TLA is currently in talks with companies regarding sales and marketing efforts. Future distribution of TLA titles on home video has yet to be determined, Curl said.
TLA president Raymond Murray added, “People’s entertainment viewing habits are rapidly changing and the previous structure of a large organization doing production, post-production, authoring, advertising, warehousing and sales in-house was a model which does not work in today’s market.”
